I'm back! And reading! And maybe even blogging! No promises!

Alas, poor Mogo!

For the record, I am in mourning! Mogo is my favorite Green Lantern after Guy Gardner! One just couldn't go wrong with Mogo! He was a planet! And a Lantern! And kind of a psychologist! And that was awesome!

That said, the last time he died, he was the scariest/best zombie ever!

Mogo inspired my first and only fanfic! Or at least the only one I'll admit to. (And because I really want to kill any shot at a political career, I have an archive.org link here. Most of the in-jokes probably don't make sense anymore anyway.)

Couldn't we kill Hal instead?

This had best not be permanent!

Dumb Question:

Am I the only one who thinks it's awful that there's never (to my knowledge) been a Power Girl Barbie Doll?

I mean, there's been other superhero Barbies of course. Various versions of Wonder Woman, Batgirl and the like (of which I approve!), Superman Returns Lois Lane who basically was a dark haired Barbie in an indistinct dress, Black Canary and so on and so forth.

Heck, there was even Halle Berry's Catwoman, and that was a travesty in a bad S&M costume!

So why no Power Girl? She's cute, blond, most of her costumes are attractive, and her breasts are her most famous feature anyway.

I would totally buy a Power Girl doll, especially if it had the boob window. (I've always liked the boob window. I'd take a hundred boob windows before one more bared midriff costume! Yeesh!)

Idling

So of course I finally get to the comic shop and start the process of getting caught up on comics on Friday. And then on Saturday, I go off to my parents' house to spend Memorial Day weekend (an hour and a half away, approximately) and what do I forget at my apartment?

Steve (my cat) is probably eating my comics right this moment.

Heh, it'd be funny if she ate the Captain America first, since she's totally named after him. (I saw her attack a wall.)

Anyway, this is my excuse today why I haven't posted anything of relevance or substance. :-P That and I watched a lot of Keeping Up Appearances with my mother. She loves it, I don't quite get why the husband doesn't up and divorce her (the brother in law is pretty hilarious though.) But it's bonding and it's fun. :-)

How's your weekend?

Things I have enjoyed via Netflix:

Cannibal the Musical
Rowan Atkinson's standup comedy
Dracula Dead and Loving It
BBC Sherlock
Drawn Together (I am aware I have terrible, terrible taste)
Earth Girls are Easy
Blackadder
Futurama

It reminds me of college, when the local video store had a five movies for six nights for seven bucks deal. I'd get a weird variety of crap that made no sense if you stack them up together and half the fun was enjoying the variety.

I never thought I'd get to do that again. :-P Netflix continues to be AWESOME!

They're putting Legolas in the Hobbit now?

That's very weird. I'm not actually much of a Tolkien purist (half the time I can't remember how to spell the man's name!) but it does seem odd.

On the plus side, it ought to bring back the fangirls. :-)

Link of the day!

I love my job but yet again, I'm a bit too tired to produce anything creatively. However, I don't feel bad because Blog@Newsarama gave us this link about the vulnerability of superhero crotches.

My inner twelve year old is v. amused right now!

Wednesday, May 25, 2011

So um. Yeah. If you haven't noticed, I've been doing all of nothing this week, except work and vegetate. This doesn't lead to me having interesting things to say, I'm afraid.

Unless you want couch potato babbling about Netflix.

(For the record: I think X-Men Schism's ads look awesome, but I'm guessing it's not a literal battle for leadership if only because I honestly think Scott would have to destroy the world and be dead for a month before WOLVERINE actually seems like a better leadership choice. There might also have to be baby eating involved. I'm just sayin'...I like Logan well enough, but things never end well when he's in charge. :-P)

Irk

So um. Still enjoying this Netflix thing. Seriously, why did it take me so long to sign up for this? Hmph!

I am weirded out by the fact that Seth MacFarlane is apparently making a new Flintstones series. I mean, don't get me wrong. I actually LIKE Family Guy (Yes I know. Guilty pleasure.) but it seems very unnecessary.

We can't have Wonder Woman, but we get Seth MacFarlane's take on the Flintstones. Some things aren't fair. :-(

Yet Another Awesome Thing

So, I finally got myself Netflix (I am DETERMINED to get my money's worth with this X-Box thing. :-P) and ended up finally watching the first episode of the BBC Sherlock series.

It's pretty awesome actually.

I actually like this version of Sherlock a lot more than RDJ's version. Nothing against RDJ, but I think his innate charm works against him. As obnoxious as his Holmes was, he was likeable in spite of himself.

This Holmes is a total asshole. And it's awesome. I totally get why only Lestrade and Ms. Hudson can tolerate him pre-Watson. I like how they incorporate the tech/modern setting, but keep the important bits. Even the music!

Really though, the core of any Holmes adaptation for me is Watson. I loved the Guy Ritchie movie even with all its flaws, because RDJ was great and because Jude Law's Watson actually got to be a smart, competent, badass. He's not brilliant like Holmes, sure, but then who is? That doesn't make the character an idiot.

This Watson is adorable. And still badass. And I particularly like how he humanizes Holmes. There's a bit in the first episode where Holmes is going on about what a woman was trying to say as she died (trying not to spoil) and he asks Watson to imagine what he'd say as he was dying. And Watson is all "I don't have to imagine" and it actually makes Holmes pause for a bit. And it's great. I always love those moments, when academic knowledge gets a brief slap in the face by real experience. It doesn't need to happen OFTEN, and to be honest it really shouldn't, since we ARE talking Sherlock Holmes here. But just a little is like sprinkles on icecream. <3

So yeah, I'm trying to space out the next two episodes, as that's all there is (so far, I hope), but I'm enjoying the series!

Weekend Fun

So anyway, I'm visiting my parents this weekend, so I got to spend a lovely few hours watching Agatha Christie's Poirot. I've only ever been able to catch a few of the movies/episodes here and there, but they are a lot of fun.

There's so much atmosphere and detail. And it's fun to see familiar actors pop up in the weirdest roles. David Suchet just embodies the role of Poirot too. I caught his Orient Express special, when he's out of costume, and he looks/sounds so different! It's pretty amazing!

This time I got to see Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile. We were kind of in the mood for travel-type murder. :-) I do know though if I'm ever on a trip and see a little Belgian guy...or Angela Lansbury, someone's likely to die. Probably me. :-)

Huh

I hadn't actually heard that Joss Whedon was directing the Avengers movie. Or maybe I did but completely forgot about it. (This is equally likely).

I'm not a huge Whedon fan, but I liked Astonishing X-Men. I actually preferred it to all of his television work. And unlike some writers, I think he manages to add humor without making the characters unrecognizeable in the process.

I'm not really a "he's a feminist icon" proponent, but I do find his work generally enjoyable, and the Avengers probably shouldn't be a really deep movie anyway. So I'm looking forward to it. It might be a good fit.

Edited to Add: Apparently I DID know that. It'd be pretty funny if my reaction to the news was widely different, but I don't believe it is. I'm just incredibly absent minded. :-P

Slacker, Me

Of course, rather than doing the smart thing and thinking of a blog post, I actually killed my Friday night playing Final Fantasy XIII on the X-Box. It was fun, and I actually like most of the characters. (Except the annoying kid, who I'm told does get better.)

So yeah, that's why I don't have a post. Sorry.

I'll be sad if Sinestro doesn't make a cameo

Dude! Apparently there's a Green Lantern roller coaster!

I love roller coasters, even though the older I get, the more I start thinking about the many ways I could totally die on one.

And now that I live in upstate NY, it's not nearly as far a drive! I need to find a way to go!

Thinking

You know what I miss? Robot duplicates. I love robot duplicates.

Of course, they lose some of their menace now that EMT devices are more easy to obtain, but still, there's something about a robot duplicate that just fills me with a sense of nostalgia.

It's like clones, but without the ick factor. :-P (Because clones inevitably sleep with your boyfriend/girlfriend which makes for genetic awkwardness. Almost no one sleeps with your robot duplicate.)

Unless your name is Hank Pym, it's really hard to convolute your family tree with robots. :-)

Interesting website of the day!

Query Shark

Basically this site is owned by a real literary agent, who has people send in sample queries about their projects to her, and she tears them apart.

It's fun and pretty educational. It's interesting to get a glimpse of how the literary world works from the other side!

So, um. Early morning tomorrow so no post today.

That said, the Hawaii 5-0 season finale was SO AWESOME. <3

Weird Thought:

So I was watching old bad sitcoms this weekend (don't ask), and I'm curious...

Has anyone else watched Full House and been disturbed by the way the adults treated Kimmy Gibler?

I mean, yeah, she's a bit annoying, but she's a KID. And she's rarely outright disrespectful to them. At least no worse than the "cute" Tanner children.

This seems to be a weird trait in the "heartwarming" family sitcoms (you know, the ones that portray reasonably healthy, happy families who genuinely like one another...which seems rare nowadays) where the otherwise kind, nice adults irrationally hate one of the kids' annoying best friends. I don't get it.

Sulking

Aw damnit, I celebrated too soon! Apparently no Wonder Woman for us.

I'm more upset by this than I thought I'd be. Yes, I'm no David E. Kelley fan, but I actually LIKED the costume, flaws and all. (I STILL say it's no stupider looking than pretty much ANY other superhero outfit. Yeah, it's too shiny and plasticy, but Superman wears pajamas with his underwear on top! Certain X-Men squeeze themselves into yellow spandex! Blue Chainmail! Bat ears!) I thought the casting looked pretty good, actually. And the story elements sounded promising. They seemed to have a coherent idea of what they wanted to do with Diana and I wanted to see how it developed.

Smallville was dreadful and it lasted for 10 whole seasons, damnit. Unfair!

I'm going to go sulk now.

?

Okay, I looked at this blog today, and I could swear I'm missing a post. That is kind of disturbing!

Wednesday, May 11, 2011

Yay!! (Maybe!)

Okay, I know I've gone back and forth on the NBC Wonder Woman pilot, (Costume = good, David E. Kelley = bad?) but I'll be happy if this rumor is true.

I really WANT Wonder Woman back on the small screen again. Even if I don't agree with every storyline or casting choice. It's about time!

Yet Another Time Waster

You may have noticed by now that one of the things that I really enjoy is watching people talk about things they don't particularly like, but express that dislike in an interesting or entertaining way.

This site is my current time waster. I'm reading his/her review of one of the Anita Blake books and it reminds me of why I lost interest in the series. I don't agree with everything the reviewer says, but he/she makes some good points here and there.

The writer also reviews other books (the main theme of the site is reviewing the Eragon books) so it's one way to kill an evening or so.

Something I really liked about the Thor movie...

It occurs to me that in my previous mostly-non-spoilery rambling about Thor, I forgot to mention something that I really liked.

I like that there is a significant female presence in the movie, and by that I mean there are women who actually are not the token sensible love interest (or recipient of sexual chemistry/voice of sanity).

I mean, don't get me wrong. I love movie!Pepper Potts like mad. And I didn't mind Liv Tyler's character in the Hulk. But they were pretty much the only female presences in their movies. Iron Man 2 also had the Black Widow, who was, I thought, the saving grace of the movie, but every other female role still seemed there just to bang Tony and maybe get a good line during a press conference.

In Thor, we do get the token love interest in Natalie Portman. (She wasn't a bad character, though I thought she could use more development. But then I thought that about all the Earth-based characters.) We also had Sif, who was the most sensible seeming of Thor's friends, but still a tad on the comic relief side. We had Frigga, who didn't say much but was visibly present and the bit with the sword was pretty awesome. We even had a funny comic relief female sidekick for Natalie Portman.

To be honest, I kind of hoped the romance would have been between Thor and Darcy (funny sidekick), since while that would have still seemed a bit rushed, it would have been funnier.

But anyway, I really liked that the movie featured a number of distinct female characters outside of the traditional love interest role. It made me happy. :-)

I Am Woman, Hear Me Meander

You know what bothers me? When a female comic fan can't admit to BEING a female comic fan, or you know find some humor in being a female comic fan without someone going on about her pandering to a fanbase or something.

I mean, say a female blogger DARES to title her blog "Has Boobs. Reads Comics." Both statements are undeniably true. (Well, I suppose not UNDENIABLY. This IS the internet after all. But I'm willing to take her word for it.) But somehow this is something to scorn.

It reminds me of one time, a couple of years ago, I saw this (FEMALE!) commenter attack a friend of mine for using an attractive picture of herself as her userimage on her blog. Apparently it was trying to get attention. It was a PICTURE OF HERSELF.

I'm not unbiased here. Look my blog. It's a bright garish pink. I don't even LIKE the color pink most of the time. I chose this color because it was eye-searing. But I also chose it because pink is a traditionally feminine color, and this was the most obnoxious version of that color I've ever seen.

I also use a feminine screenname and my twitter uses an actual picture of me too.

I don't do this to get attention from male geeks (at least beyond the "hey, this person is smart/funny!" type attention which totally feeds my ego. I don't do this because I've had bad experience with male geeks in the past and want to thumb my nose at them.

Of course, if I WAS doing it for attention or to make a point, that'd be my business. I don't MAKE you come here and read this crap.

I'm a woman. I read comics. I talk about these facts. I joke about these facts. I'm not going to pretend otherwise. And if you don't like that, fine. You're an idiot.

Have a nice day! :-)

Thor! A minimal spoiler review.

So for the first time in ages, I was actually able to catch a movie the first weekend it's out! Yay, me!

So anyway, out of deference to this rare timeliness, I'll try not to spoil.

I liked the movie a lot! I will say though, that it felt more than a little disjointed. Especially since the parts on Asgard were a lot more interesting than the parts on Earth. It seemed like far more development and personality went into the Asgardians than the humans, and as much as I like Natalie Portman, I didn't really buy the sudden love story parts.

I really liked the acting. The portrayals of Thor and Loki were the high points of the movie for me. (I was still a bit shaky at the end to exactly how Loki's motivation worked, but I thought the actor totally sold it. It was interesting that he went with a more somber approach than I would have expected for the god of mischief.)

The special effects ranged from awesome to occasionally goofy. I really liked the Asgard stuff, especially the bifrost bridge. Also, Jotunheim looked awesome.

I also liked that they didn't go overboard with the Shakespearian speech. I like it in the comics, but I have my doubts that it'd really work in a movie. (At least not a movie that doesn't involve actual Shakespearian dialogue). They found a good balance for the movie that sounded formal/maybe a little archaic but not so much that it's more distracting than appropriate.

Also, the fight scenes were great. So I liked it! :-)

Shameless Placeholder Post:

So, well, it's been a hectic week. My brain is fried. And I just realized I haven't thought of a Mother's Day present yet. So um. Yeah.

No post today. Have a good weekend! :-)

Thursday, May 05, 2011

Hee.

Is it weird that I totally think there should be a Superfriends type pet book? You know, with Krypto, Streaky, Comet, that Bat-Dog from the seventies (Ace?), and so on?

They could all have adorable animal adventures with superpowers!

It might be awkward working a counterpart for Aquaman, but I like imagining a fish in one of those land suits from Futurama. :-)

I dunno, it just seems like one of those things that could be unbearably cute or extremely annoying. Win-win!

Recommendation Request - Video Game Related

So, I now have an X-Box 360. :-) I'm not altogether sure what to DO with it now. I definitely like a lot of the perks and the few games I bought with it (like Ultimate Alliance, because well. Cap. :-P), but this is my first game console since the Playstation 2, and I have no idea what's actually out there.

So anyone with an X-Box, can you recommend me games? I tend to like games that don't require a lot of hand-eye coordination or timing. :-P Role-Playing Games and puzzle games are my favorite.

So what do you like to play, and why?

Tuesday, May 03, 2011

WANT!

Okay, dude. I swear, I was GOING to post something insightful and relevant*.

But then I got distracted by this Flaming Thor Helmet.

That thing is totally on the list of things that I really really want but know I should never be allowed to own.

* I totally was not. :-P

Miscellaneous?

Ooo, it looks like they've confirmed the villain of the new Avengers movie. (Link contains spoiler, obviously.)

Also apparently there'll be 7 avengers, which seems like a pretty good set up to me. :-) I'm especially looking forward to seeing Captain America get unfrozen. That's always one of my favorite stories and I love seeing how they do it.

On an unrelated note, can someone explain to me what the appeal of the Ultimate Universe is now that they've killed almost everyone (or at least everyone interesting) off anyway?

A Miscellaneous Thought

You know what would be a fun mutant power to have? The power to change your scent? Like, you'd never have to worry about deodorant. Ready for a date? No shelling out money for designer perfume. Want to make someone go away, congratulations, limburger cheese!

And you could totally fuck with Wolverine that way. Just saying. I'd have fun with it!
