Kirby Meme

So, Jon's tagged me for a meme about my favorite Jack Kirby design.

It probably won't surprise any long-time readers of my blog to know that my all-time favorite character design (as well as my all-time least) are both from the pages of Simon and Kirby's Sandman.

My least favorite naturally is the revisioning of the Sandman. Wesley Dodds's suit and gas-mask combination was an incredibly classy and nifty looking costume. It's smart, sophisticated and just darn cool. So I never understood why the Simon and Kirby run changed it and went with this:

It's a monstrosity. The only person who can get away with that sort of head-cowl and not look incredibly stupid is Captain America. And part of that is because deep-down I suspect Steve Rogers is supposed to be a giant dork. The color scheme is horrendous too. Gold and purple? Egads. And the abrupt transition from purple to gold on the arms and chest? It's completely illogical! Why would anyone have that sewn?

However, oddly enough, as dumb as the Sandman looks, I've always really liked the design of his sidekick, Sandy the Golden Boy:

It's a very cute design, much more fitting for a child sidekick than an adult man. Gold and red somehow avoid being the eyesore that gold and purple are, possibly because there's a lot less of the red than Wes's purple. The parts of the costume that are red make sense: the collar, mask, shorts and boots. There's no weird ribcage transition here. Not to mention the simple mask is much better than a cowl.

Sandy's costume falls more onto the Bucky end of the scale than the Robin end as sidekicks go. It's actually about as tasteful a costume design as you can get in Golden Age comics. The top has elements of a loose polo shirt, which manages to be both a little preppy and still quite modest. Kids probably shouldn't be in skin-tight clothes and the shirt manages to avoid that nicely. The shorts are nice too. It's hard to tell from the particular panel, but the bottoms of the costume are distinctly short-like as opposed to Robin's panties. They actually cover some thigh! The gold tights, while skin-tight, manage to not be quite so...unclad as Robin.

The combination manages to be cute, distinctly dated (in a good way, given that the character's kept his 1940s roots), evocative, suitably childish and even practical...or as practical as these costumes get at least! :-)

And now, rounding out my own personal appreciation week:

Jason Blood strapped half-naked to a table. It's not the first time it happened, it's not the last. But it is nice to look at.

Anyway, B/C week might be done here at PFP, but don't let me stop you from having fun with it! It's been great seeing everyone's entries! I'm gonna try to get a link list up soon that has everyone's! If you'd like to make sure I don't forget you, feel free to leave the URL in the comments of one of my Week posts. I'll make sure you get added!

B/C Appreciation Week, Day E.

I'm going to rip myself off for this one, but my good friend Green With Wheelpower did ask for Kyle specifically.

(Or rather, I decided to interpret it that way because I'm tired and lazy and more people should enjoy this image anyway. :-))

B/C Appreciation Week Day IV

Does it count as cheesecake when they're unconscious?

Regardless, I really like this image. The ripped clothing's a bit gratuitous...(honestly, either it's made of unstable molecules and grew *with* her, or it didn't. In which case, it can't grow at all. No decorative ripping!)

That said, I think the image is oddly pretty. I have an odd appreciation of size-shifters that remain in scale when they grow. It creates such a lovely juxtaposition sometimes. Like here, with Hulkling against her hand. Or in the Avengers animated cartoon, when Hank collapses and Jarvis runs out worried and his height is the same as the width of Hank's forehead.

The image is like an old fairy story. The normal sized person surrounded by tiny magical people. Or Liliputians. Whatever.

I just like the image. :-) It's pretty!

Beefcake/Cheesecake Appreciation Week: Day 2

Okay, today's panel is from JSA #32:

Power Girl in her underwear.

Yeah, it's a little gratuitous. But hey, at least there's a reason for her to be in her skivvies, as opposed to certain others.

What I like about the image is the, well, power inherent in her stance and in her frame. She might be sans clothing, but it's not phasing her. She's not embarrassed or awkward. She's matter-of-fact, confident without flaunting or posing, and no-nonsense without looking the least bit over-sensitive or over-defensive.

And her muscle tone! This is a woman who could kick your ass without breaking a sweat or a nail. I've always liked that about Power Girl. And in this image, it's really obvious how powerful a frame she has. She is built to support her always-admirable assets. Her hair is pretty too.

Also, last but not least. Her underwear is not only attractive but also ACTUALLY SENSIBLE! How cool is that?!

Why Captain America is a better mentor than GA Batman...

I may be a DC girl at heart, but there is one thing I have to say...

In the Golden Age, Captain America was a better mentor than Batman.

If this were Batman, he'd have made Robin wear the corset. But Steve? If anyone is going to dress up like a woman, it's going to be him.

It's his patriotic duty!

Man, that's one ugly woman.

Random Ridiculous Realization!

In the Golden Age, everyone kicked ass.

Whether you're a housewife (Ma Hunkel), an archeologist (Carter Hall), a train engineer (Alan Scott) or a socialite (pretty much everyone else), if you're in a Golden Age comic, you will invariably kick ass.

Or scream a lot and get kidnapped.

Guess which category Santa Claus falls in:

That's right, ladies and gentlemen. Santa kicks ass.

Begging Forgiveness

In my last post, my conjecture about Darkseid/Catwoman managed to offend Chris Sims so much that he's threatening to banish me from the blogosphere, back to my hellish homeland of livejournal and fanficdom that I fled so long ago!

Or something like that.

So now I feel the need to publically grovel with a humble offering of contrition:

Please let me stay! I'm begging you!

Incoherent Freedom Fighters Rant:

Okay, I'm trying to like the new Freedom Fighters, I really am. I think there are some great ideas there. I like GI Joe Commando type Doll Man, Firebrand is interesting, Uncle Sam is always fun...

But I have one problem. Make that two.

Stormy Knight's breasts.

It's not the size that bothers me. I mean heck, I'm a huge Power Girl fan after all. It's not the character, I think Stormy seems interesting.

Her name is dumb, but since she IS a model, I'm going to assume it's a stage name.

My problem is that her breasts are not drawn in any way that looks remotely natural. They look like plastic balloons. They're shiny. They are reflecting the light.

I hate to be catty, but I can't help but wonder if a certain artist and colorist have ever actually seen a real set of boobs up close before.

It's appalling. How is that attractive? I mean, I'm not particularly interested in women, but I can't really imagine how a straight man (or a lesbian) could possibly prefer something that looks like a blow up doll and even reflects light like one could possibly be preferable to breasts with a natural shape/color.

I'm not someone prone to letting bad art get in the way of a good story. I'm pretty immune to it really. I mean, good art is vastly preferable, but as I'm not terribly visually oriented, I can be pretty hard to faze.

My favorite comic is Warrior. That should say something right there.

But this. I keep trying, but I really can't get past it. And it upsets me because I really do think I'm missing something good.

It's really upsetting. I want to spend my money on this comic, I really really do. But I can't justify it.

HER BOOBS ARE REFLECTING LIGHT!!!!

Thank you.

Young Avengers

Thanks to you and you, I've found myself reading Young Avengers and really really liking it.

This probably isn't a shock to anyone who's already read the series. It's cute, witty and the characters are fun. It's also got a very Marvel take on a theme that I'd considered previously to be almost solely DC related: legacy.

It's not like "Captain America", "Thor", "Hulk" or "Iron Man" are really inheritable roles even in the sense that "Superman", "Batman" or "Wonder Woman" are (in theory at least), and it's not like the YA members are actually sidekicks. But there's a lot of emphasis on the inspirational roles that the superheroes have and a lot of interesting familial ties that make things fun.

Not to mention that unlike most of Marvel's franchises, there's a real sense of fun here. Not that Spiderman, Avengers and X-Men aren't fun. They're lots of fun to read, but it rarely seems like the characters are having fun doing it. Here, it definitely seems like they're having fun.

These themes are part of the reason I'm 85-90% a DC reader, so I'm thrilled to see them in a Marvel setting.

But really I love this comic for one bit, from YA #1:

Now. They've probably mentioned this before. I don't know. There are many decades I haven't seen of Marvel comics. I'm not a huge Spiderman fan anyway.

But when I read this page, with J.Jonah Jameson's memories of idolizing Bucky. It was like...YES. This one page turned a guy I'd been considering a one-note sputtering cartoon character for years into a human being for me. It made so much sense.

As a child, J. Jonah Jameson idolized Bucky. And then Bucky died. And that, while probably not new information to anyone but me, gives so much more depth to the way I perceive Jameson.

How much might the memory of a dead child-hero really play into the man's very vocal hatred of Spiderman...who'd started as a teenaged hero. How much of his bluster did he actually mean, and how much was masking something else entirely.

It actually makes me almost want to hunt down old Spiderman issues and read him again. See how this new information makes me read him differently. Maybe later. But it's still pretty damn cool...
