Pretty, Fizzy Paradise

I'm back! And reading! And maybe even blogging! No promises!

Another fun website that I've been using to waste time instead of blogging:

Good Show, Sir

Wherein you can see some of the stupidest/awesomest book covers ever. (It might be strange but I totally want to read Jack Vance's The Face now.)

So if you're looking for a way to waste time, I recommend it!

No Post Today (Again)

It's Friday night and it's been a really long week, so again, no post today. But I'm not leaving you empty handed.

My favorite Scott Summers costume!

Cyclops - Master of Disguise

With bonus, an equally ridiculous Lorna costume too!

Scott really needs to pretend to be evil more often! :-P

Something I wish I still didn't know about:

So apparently there's going to be a Smurfs movie. In 3d. WHY?

Have they learned nothing from Garfield?

I didn't even know the Smurfs was still popular with today's kids. (That's the only reason even having a Smurfs movie would make sense to me.) But even if it is, what happened to standard animation? Why not make a movie version of a cartoon still a damn cartoon?

I don't understand Hollywood.

Me Bitching About Nothing :-P

Okay, while I admit, I might be starting to be won over by various bits of press for X-Men First Class (even though I STILL don't think it's X-Men without Cyclops. I'm irrational that way. :-P) I have to say...

Emma Frost's costume looks really stupid in this trailer.

I like Emma, generally. I criticize the character occasionally, but in general I do like the character. I've never had a problem with any of her costumes since I think it's in character (I do think it may get in the way of marketing the character to female fans, but that's a different issue), and now that she has the diamond form, it's not like she has any particular need for armor. She could go naked and be reasonably protected.

But it just doesn't look GOOD in the trailer to me. Where her costumes in the comic tend to look like lingerie, they at least look like COSTUMES. This kind of looks like she just didn't finish getting dressed.

(I'm speaking specifically of the moment where she takes diamond form and is next to the guys in tuxedos.) Of course, it's possible that the character WAS legitimately in her underwear for some reason, in which case I rescind my complaint. :-)

I suppose I just like my costumes-that-suspiciously-look-like-underwear to look either more athletic (i.e. Wonder Woman's leotard doesn't bother me because it looks like a modified sports leotard or bathing suit) or more stylized. Fredricks of Hollywood over Hanes Her Way, please. :-P

New Rumors Will Be A-Coming!

Ooo, apparently Avengers is starting production! That makes me happy, especially as it means there should be some good rumors coming out of it.

I'm especially happy because Captain America will be in it, and I'm guessing/hoping that it will include the unfreezing him from the iceberg. I really like that they've set it up this way, with the Cap movie in WWII and then unfreezing in Avengers, because it always seems like the other Avengers SHOULD be there when he gets unfrozen. (One of many problems I had with the 90s Cap movie. Though granted, it was probably ranked at #25 or something in terms of importance.)

Are they still planning an Ant-Man movie? I haven't heard anything about that lately, but it does seem a little incomplete without Hank and Jan. (I suppose that Black Widow could end up filling token female role, but I'm hoping that there will actually be more than one chick. Besides, size-changing is fun!)

So, weird question:

Has there every been a Harley Quinn and Duala Dent team up? Because that just seems like a really interesting villain pair.

Though maybe having two Joker-related villainesses in one adventure would get a bit tiring real fast.

Awesome Link for You

I'm not a rampant Twilight hater like some (though it really REALLY does not suit my taste. I like my vampires grown-ups and sans sparkle) but this link is awesome:

Reasoning With Vampires

Best of all, it's educational! I've picked up a lot of grammar/writing tips for my own stuff! While laughing my ass off. :-)

A Birthday Celebration

It is Ragnell's birthday! Since the gracious lady has been too busy of late with her missives about the Woman Wonder, I fear she has neglected her other concerns: namely the shapely rears of those in the heroic profession!

Therefore I beseech you all, far and wide, to join me in making up for this gratuitous self-neglect! Let us celebrate!

As my gift to the Lady, I offer this set of panels from Vision and Scarlet Witch #05.

Pietro Doth Not Listen to His Sister, but Doth Possess A Fine Set of Buttocks

Appreciate the dual wonders of the silver-haired speedster's gluteus maximus as he spends more time raving of birth order than acknowledging his fair sister's announcement! For shame, but I hope that Lady Ragnell enjoys the sight nonetheless!

Happy Birthday!

Damnit, I've Been Won Over

All right, damnit. You know, when I saw the trailer for Green Lantern online, it really didn't grab me. I thought it looked more stupid than good. I mean, it didn't look BAD as comic movies go, but I wasn't terribly enthused either. It seemed like a fun popcorn movie.

But I just saw, for the first time, a commercial for the movie on television and...well, maybe there's just something different about seeing it on tv vs seeing the trailer on the internet, because now? I'm enthused. It actually looks awesome. Sinestro, Abin Sur, Tomar Re all look awesome. The costume and effects look great. And Ryan Reynolds is totally selling his take on Hal to me.

I mean, I'm not expecting cinematic brilliance here still, but suddenly I'm a lot more excited for the movie! It looks like an AWESOME popcorn movie! Yay!

So, um?

...do we really need another remake of the Crow?

But I think I'm likely the wrong demographic because I didn't even like the first one.

On the other hand, Blog@Newsarama is right and Little Thor is the cutest thing ever! Eee!

Etsy Made Them Do It :-)

Thanks for the webcomics recs, guys!

Anyway, to disguise the fact that I have nothing to blog about today. I figured I'd ramble a bit about how my new favorite Blog@Newsarama feature is the Etsy Made Me Do It one.

I've always liked seeing the awesome things people make, and this Doctor Who themed post kind of makes me salivate. I don't have the money to spend on that kind of thing, and really, I'm not much of a collector (unless we're talking books, and even then it's more of a library than a collection because a book in mint condition is a book unread and I don't believe in that).

But they are really really cool to look at and maybe fantasize about keeping on my bookshelf. :-)

So that question again?

I know I've asked this at least once before, but I've been having a fairly hectic time at work, and I could use a new at home distraction with nice, perusable archives:

So, recommend me your favorite webcomics? Funny is preferable. (I get enough drama as it is.) Cute animals are a plus. Sanity is not required.

Yay! Catching up with Comics!

You know, I gotta admit. I still don't completely understand what this Fear Itself event is entirely supposed to be about. But I'm REALLY enjoying the tie-ins. Even if they just seem like regular books with "Fear Itself" stamped on the cover. It makes me happy to see "Captain America" on so many books too!

My favorite issue though? Totally the Cyclops one-shot. Uptight, teenaged Scott! Angsting that he's uptight! (Of course!) Nagging his teammates! (Naturally!) Constantly quoting the Art of War like he memorized it! (which, well, of course he has!) Stealing bicycles and leaving contact information! (He doesn't have to be a dick about it after all!) Distracting the badguy with his lack of self-esteem before zapping him! ("One less me, but one less you? Sounds like a good trade.")

It's everything I love about Original Five!Cyclops in one adorable one-shot! Yay!

(Xavier still should have gotten that kid therapy though.)

Booster!

Damn you, Smallville. Every so often, you just manage to spark my interest again.

Because dude, Booster Gold? Looks AWESOME. And we'll get both Blue Beetles to boot? I'm seriously not seeing a downside.

Except for the fact that I'm not really a fan of the show. But I might make an exception for this one. :-)

After spending the last week or two marathoning way way way too much Kung Fu: The Legend Continues for any sane mind to deal with, I have come to a realization.

The only way that series remotely makes any sense is to imagine it as just a really long, or a series of really short 40 minute terrible kung fu movies.

I recommend screwing with the synchronization too, it totally helps the appeal if their mouths no longer quite mesh up with what they're saying.

...It might have been a long week.

Thing that is awesome:

My Nook. My nook is awesome. Presumably Kindles and other e-readers are also awesome, but the one I have is a Nook. So that's the one I have imperical evidence is awesome. I was always one of those people who couldn't really see the point of having one. And to be fair, I still think that ultimately nothing compares to having a book in your hand.

But being able to carry like a hundred books in one little device so you can pick and choose when stuck for forty-some odd minutes in a waiting room? Is pretty awesome. I can shove whole series on this thing. It's also helpful in the sense that I still haven't moved a lot of my real books from my parents' house to my apartment. (I WILL at some point, I swear!)

What's also cool is the ability to switch font sizes. I haven't used it much, but my dad swears by this feature. Eyes get tired, forget reading glasses? No problem!

My favorite part is that it keeps your place automatically too. And you can put in additional bookmarks which almost makes up for the fact that it's a bit more tedious trying to reread a part if you think you missed something. But the whole never having to find a half-chewed up bookmark (...I totally chew bookmarks. It's disgusting, it really is) thing is pretty great for me.

So yeah. Nook = awesome. Not quite the same as a real book, but there are some good trade-off perks. I dig it!

Wednesday, April 13, 2011

Ooo.

God damnit. I was trying not to be excited for the Green Lantern film. But...KILOWOG! Tomar Re!

I would have expected them to cast voices sooner, but maybe with CGI, it's not as necessary.

It does sound like they've made good casting choices though, so yay!

Muppets?

This announcement that Marvel will be republishing Muppet Show comics has led me to this shameful confession.

I've never really understood the appeal of the Muppets.

I mean don't get me wrong, as a kid, I adored Sesame Street, so it's not like I have an aversion to Jim Henson or anything. (I also like Kermit, but mostly because I saw him on Sesame Street.) And Farscape is awesome.

But the Muppets themselves never appealed to me. I don't know why. Maybe it's something about the character designs. Also, I vaguely recall that as a really little Kalinara, Gonzo made me cry. I don't remember why, but I still hold a grudge.

But it's cool that they're republishing the comics. I just don't get 'em.

Interesting News!

Apparently (according to the DC comics website at least), Lilah Sturges is going to be writing Power Girl starting #26. I'm thrilled. I'm like one of three people who've been reading JSA All Stars, but I love(d) it so much. And she did a great job with her. I'm not a Winick fan, I admit, so I haven't been reading it (also, I don't acknowledge anything to do with that Generation Lost stuff. :-P) But I'm going to start now. Can she bring Sandy with her? I kind of thought that JSA All-Stars might have been hinting a potential relationship there, and Sandy doesn't have a book anymore anyway. So he's gotta be available. Come on, save the guy from limbo! :-)

Question

I was thinking about the Superman movie rumors. I think they've confirmed Zod as the villain, which makes me happier than yet another Lex Luthor story. Don't get me wrong, I do love Lex Luthor, but it seems like he's always the villain.

But then again, Zod's been done too. One of the things I really like about the Batman movies is that they don't tend to use the same villains over and over. I mean, granted, we've seen the Joker twice, and Two-Face, but we've also seen Ra's al Ghul, Catwoman, the Penguin, the Riddler, Scarecrow, Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy.

Granted, not all of these appearances were GOOD, but we did see them. It never seems like we get as much variety with Superman villains though. (Though I admit, I could be wrong about that. My memory of the Superman movies are older. And I don't think I saw the last one, pre Superman Returns.)

I'm shakier with Superman's rogue gallery though, for all that I prefer Superman to Batman as a character. So I'm not really sure what villains I'd like to see in place of Zod or Lex once in a while. Brainiac, I think. Maybe Doomsday. I dunno.

Who would you like to see? Do you have a favorite Superman villain that's been neglected?

Saturday, April 09, 2011

Thought:

You know what I'd like to see more of? Superheroes with submarines. Because submarines are awesome.

Maybe once Aquaman's going again, there'll be some good crossovers. Or maybe he can pull a Namor and punch one. Either way, I'll be happy.

Heh

So yeah, apparently rather than doing something useful (like catch up on comics! :-P), I have felt the need to start watching Kung Fu: The Legend Continues again.

It's kind of interesting. This time around, I like Peter a lot more than I did before. Possibly I've mellowed with age. Because his moments of complete idiocy don't bother me as much. Or it may just be that I finally saw the first episode, and the whole fake-robbery-to-prevent-real-robbery thing was just crazy enough to push my buttons.

It is still a dreadful, dreadful show though. But I enjoy it. It's one of those shows that's too crazy to actually have a jump the shark moment. Because really, when you've had your cast beset upon by stuffed spiders, mind controlling ninja, lookalike movie actors, David Carradine playing all of his own ancestors, and so on, a shark is child's play. I think the only "Jump the Shark" moment that show could have is if it suddenly became legitimately good.

You get so much more enjoyment out of life when you stop holding entertainment up to these "standards" thing, I've been hearing so much about. :-P

Comic Book Adaptation News!

Ooo, apparently there's going to be a comic book adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time.

That seems pretty awesome actually. It's been probably more than two decades since I read that book, but I love comic book adaptations. For all that I'm a superhero fan first and foremost, I love seeing people do new and different things with comics and I think that adaptations bring that. (Well, okay, the STORY might not be new, but the challenges of converting to graphic novel storytelling bring interesting results.)

And besides, it sounds like it'd be adorable!

Personal Update

As it turns out, today was a much better day than yesterday. But thanks for the recommendations (and video of cat! :-D) as they made a miserable evening much much better!

Now I am energized, and will hopefully get the chance to catch up on comics this weekend!

Tuesday, April 05, 2011

Yep

Okay, today was kind of miserable. So I'm enlisting you guys to perk me up. :-P Tell me about something that makes you happy? Or a good thing that happened to you? Or a funny story? Or a good book you read?

Anything would do. I beseech you!

Game of Thrones preview!

Holy crap. I didn't even know there WAS a spinoff.comicbookresources.com, but there is, and they have this 14 minute preview.

Full disclosure, I turned it off a few minutes in because honestly, I don't want to get hooked until I can actually watch the whole thing. I saw just enough to verify that it looks pretty freaking awesome.

Really freaking awesome. <3

Hey Cool!

It looks like they've modified the Wonder Woman costume a tad for the tv show.

I like it.

Of course, I also liked the uber-shiny version we saw earlier. And I liked the star spangled bathing suit she usually wears. But I like this too. I'm pretty easygoing. This strikes me as a nice practical look, as superhero costumes go. I don't think modern Diana NEEDS long pants, but I kind of like that she's actually in a costume I could wear for Halloween and not freeze my tuckus off. (Well, leg wise at least. I'm not sure I'm proportioned right to pull off the top.) I also love that the boots are something I could totally walk/run in. I trip over half-inch heels, so I DEFINITELY appreciate that. (More costumes for us klutzy girls please! :-P)

I did see something that made me slightly aghast though while I was looking for fridge dispatch posts and unfortunately, I didn't save the link. But I saw someone complain about one of the new costume pictures, not about the costume (which I understand even if I like it) but because she's making a "grr" face in the picture. Because apparently playing a superhero means you can't show physical strain.

That strikes me as dumb because until we can replace actors entirely with CGI, we're going to have to accept that occasionally human beings will slip and do something human. If I can suspend disbelief enough to believe in bracelets that can stop bullets, I can accept that Diana's really really annoyed and/or concentrating on her running.

But yeah, even though I liked the other version, I really like this one. Not as shiny and the stars make me all appropriately nostalgic. <3

Weird Trivia About Me

1. I have never seen the musical Cats. Which is weird as I actually kind of love Andrew Lloyd Webber. And Cats are my favorite animal. I am however slightly afraid of people in cat makeup.

2. I was once accidently Saved at a Born Again bible camp. Long story. For what it's worth I still identify as severely lapsed Catholic. But it's always good to have a backup.

3. In my junior year of college, I had the brief thought of auditioning for American Idol by singing "I am the Very Model of a Modern Major General." Not because I'm a particularly good singer (I'm not), but I thought it'd be funny. I even learned all the words for it. Sadly, stuff came up and I never really had time to do it. This is probably for the best.

4. My vendetta against deer is still ongoing.

5. As evidenced by the second of the two deer links, I have a surprisingly good handwriting with a touchpad mouse. :-P

:-)

Okay, so no fancy April Fools joke from me. I don't have a good mind for pranks to begin with and what's left of it dribbled out my ears a month ago.

However, when I was trying to think of a joke, I started thinking of "Worst Possible Casting Choices." It wasn't enough to expand, but it is a pretty funny thought exercise in my opinion.

For example: One of the girls from the Hills as Wonder Woman. Keanu Reeves as Batman. Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze. (Oh. Oops.)

Got any suggestions?
