Question

What's the worst comic book movie you ever saw?

For me, naturally, it's the 1990s Captain America. I've blogged about why.

There are other movies that are objectively bad that I really enjoyed, such as Nick Fury. And there are movies that are very bad adaptations that actually make decent movies if you pretend you never saw the original comic, such as Constantine. Captain America managed to combine bad, with bad adaptation, with the worst crime of all: it was boring! (And totally self-contradictory.)

So what's it for you?

SUPERMAN IV, easy. Even as a kid who loved watching Godzilla movies, I laughed long and hard at the "effects" sequences.

The Catwoman movie with Halle Berry. Thank God, I didn't pay money to see it.

    Bleh.

Batman and Robin: Batgirl was pointless; George Clooney just seemed bored; Barbara becoming Batgirl made no sense and worst of all Arnie was wasted as Mr. Freeze.

Should have been Bane, damn it.

Wow, there are just so many to choose from...Superman III, Batman & Robin, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Catwoman...when it comes right down to it, I think Batman & Robin probably just edges out Wolverine and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

I actually enjoyed Superman IV as a kid--in fact, it was my favorite of the four, entirely because it had Superman fighting a proper supervillain. In the light of adulthood, it's clearly a bad movie, with the worst special effects of the series, but I think Superman III is still worse. The core concept of IV is fairly solid (why doesn't Superman get involved in political struggles?), only the B-Plot of III has any redeeming qualities (what happens when Superman is evil?).

I've managed to avoid most of the bad superhero movies, so it's probably Superman III for me. I liked it at the time, but I was a lot younger, and in retrospect it's more a parody of itself than anything else, and not a good one, either.

The Captain America movie comes in a close second, but doesn't really count since I only saw the beginning (up to where he kicks the missile to redirect it from Washington DC to Alaska).

    (Word verification: producto. He's the z-list silver-age supervillain of z-list silver-age supervillains, isn't he?)

I was conned into watching The Spirit. It combines the cardinal sins of being terrible and being boring, thus vaunting it over both Captain America and Batman & Robin.

It's the Spirit for me, hands down. Oh wait, I forgot the first Hulk movie.

SUPERMAN IV, hands down. At least SUPERMAN III had a wonderfully schizoid Christopher Reeve performance and a smoking-hot Annette O'Toole.

Spawn... I walked out before the ending... and I had never done that before.
