The Memory is the First to Go...

Okay, you know I've read a lot of Green Lantern comics right? I mean, I doubt I have to prove my level of GL knowhow to anyone who's read a significant portion of this blog.

But I suddenly embarrassingly realize that I have a question that I'm sure must have an answer, likely in a comic I've even read, but that I have no recollection of it.

What do Hal and Kyle do with their rings while in civilian garb?

What I mean is, well, it's a pretty obvious indicator of who's a Lantern I'd imagine. It's a big clunky green ring with a Lantern symbol. And both guys are attractive enough that if nothing else, I'm sure there are girls who'll glance down at their hands to see about the ring situation, if you know what I mean.

I'd guess that they make them invisible somehow. It's the most logical solution (admittedly, neither Hal nor Kyle are particularly intelligent sometimes) and makes the most sense. But for the life of me, I can't remember if/when I'd ever seen that established anywhere.

Can someone help reassure this sieve-brained fangirl before I actually start convincing myself that Hal and Kyle are indeed that stupid? I mean, I don't mind stupid, but then there's STUPID...

Jog my memory? Please?

I remember Hal making his ring invisible. However, I don't remember Kyle doing the same. In fact, it seems like Kyle's ring would be visible while he was "off-duty." Of course, Kyle wasn't as careful as Hal was about the whole secret-identity thing.

Maybe the difference is that the rings don't glow brightly when they're not being used, and therefore they're not as obvious?

I...I don't know! This is obviously a serious question however.

Hal seems to treat his ring rather cavalierly...leaving it in his locker while he goes on missions and so on. I can see him slipping it off his finger, and sticking it in a pocket. It must be fun when he throws those pants in the wash and forgets about the ring!

Kyle...well, I'm not sure. It may have never occured to him to hide it. I mean, he DID have this habit of answering to his own name while wearing the suit and mask. Oh Kyle...you're just SO adorable.

Or maybe they just diguise them as signet rings?

That's why Guy and John have the right idea. None of this secret identity stuff for them!

Wasn't there a Silver Age story that established (though, as is often the case with Silver Age stories, not necessarily consistently or permanently) that Hal disguised the ring as his college fraternity ring or something? I think it was a plot point in a story having to do with said fraternity, and somehow the power ring gets switched with an ordinary ring at an inconvenient moment?

In one of the Denny O'Neil/Mike Grell issues from the 70's, one of the modifications to the new rings was that it could change shape. In that story, the ring became Hal's sunglasses. I don't know if that ability of the ring ever appeared again.

I recall Kyle specifically doesn't sleep with the ring on because he has hell of nightmares. This implies he wears it the rest of the time.

On the other hand he -is- a Sun Belt artist. A ring is probably the least jewelry he'd be expected to use.

Tom: Kyle's Changed in the middle of a freakn' DINER! nuff Said!:).

sallyp: Justprior to Emerald Twight there is indeed a pane w/ Hal's ring in back pocket.

Kyle even slept w/ the ring ...until circle f fire, tends to use it in everyday life but can make it invisible

As a side note Guy only takes his ring off "on vacation" he'll never want ANYONE to forget he's Honor Guard #1 BAMF
    Hope this helps Kalinara,:)

well there are people in the DCU who wear superhero symbol printed cloths (Snapper Carr in Young Justice wore a new one every issue) and I think i remember Wally wearing a GL shirt back a few years ago. So they probably have fake green lantern rings. People probably think they are fans or that it is for some cause (like wearing a live strong bracelet)

Emerald Dawn II (commence groaning from those who hate Emerald Dawn) tackled this question.

As Hal is being booked for jail (again, cue groans) he is asked to put all personal belongings on the desk. The officer says "And the ring, too" and Hal replies, "Ring? What...I don't..." The image seems to indicate the ring is turning invisible at this point.

"Hey, that's nice. A magician right here, in our very own prison. Now maybe you can use your tricks to bring the ring back, huh? Or maybe we'll have to give you our special prize for magicians...a strip search," the officer says (cue the chorus of "You fools, you're giving him what he wants!").

Hal's response in the form of a thought balloon: "Brother. What a hero must endure."

Green -- Kyle slept with the ring right after Alex died according to "Circle of Fire" and that is a plot point there; but the JLA story "Tower of Babel" uses the fact that he takes his ring off before bed as a plotpoint.

There is an untold story in between Alex's Death and "Tower of Babel" where Kyle creates a nightmare construct and stops wearing his ring to bed because of it. I DEMAND THIS STORY IMMEDIATELY IN A FLASHBACK TALE!!!

Kevin, I did not imply that I was personally knocking Emerald Twilight as part II came out just as I started collecting Green Lantern, so of course I picked it up and loved it. I still think some of it should still be in continuity (and I believe some is).

My point was that whenever it is mentioned, people come out of the woodwork to bash it.

Green with Fear: I only took with Keith Giffen and Gerard Jones came up with and, let's face it, Hal and "The Todd" on Scrubs have some things in common.
