Pretty, Fizzy Paradise

I'm back! And reading! And maybe even blogging! No promises!

Do you see what I see?

I meant to blog about this image (a sneak peek from Justice Society #3) earlier:

Ray and Loren have some really thought-provoking critiques of the image. I highly recommend reading them if you haven't yet.

But I have to admit, I didn't notice any of that myself. My only reaction was... "OMG! SAND! YAY!!!"

Sorry, it's the first time since 52's first issue that my favorite character got panel time. Yay! Sand!

Thanks for the shout out, K!

And, yeah...I'm not saying there aren't all kinds of neat things in this image. But, I couldn't help but be struck by who was missing from the picture.

I'm embarassed by my reaction because I went straight for my minority and noticed Obsidian was missing straight away . . . but didn't notice Mister Terrific wasn't there until it was pointed out to me.

Still, Sand does look pretty cool.

I'm sorry, but I'm so shallow, that all I noticed was how strange Maxine's costume was.

And that she must get dizzy.

Is it just me, or do the various Flashes just move their arms and legs real fast while basically running in place so they can stay in the group shots?

We really should have seen a motion blure of Jay going all the way back to the table, or something.

Mr. Terrific is in Checkmate getting it hot with Sasha Bordeaux. Obsidian is probably getting ready to be killed by the criminal du jour, since he's a direct descendant of a JSA member and gay and all.

Also, according to certain livejournal communities, there are at least two homosexuals in that picture (six or seven for the more enthusiastic).

Doesn't Obsidian appear in the first issue as the security guard for the brownstone? So it seems like he's not part of the team proper, which would explain his absence.

As far as Mr. Terrific/Jakeem are concerned, I have no idea why they wouldn't be there.

loren: *nod* You're right. The missing people are important (I'm hoping context will make it a bit better...or that it's not the full image...I'm a blind optimist sometimes. :-))

Besides, it was a good critique.

flidget: :-) I admit, I didn't notice either right away. So I'm even more embarrassed. :-)

sallyp: Her costume may grow on me. I haven't decided yet. :-)

serpent: Jay's considerate that way. :-P

zaratustra: Heh. Well, established homosexual characters are a bit rarer...

tom: I don't know if Jakeem's rejoined the team yet. But yeah, it's a bit strange.

    I see Starman's butt.

Jakeen hasn't joined the team yet. Hopefully he's being held off on because Geoff Johns has a really cool introduction for him, not because they ran out of room or something.

Isn't Mr. Terrific the chariman and field leader of the Society? I mean, this image is a story panel from an as-yet-unreleased issue, not a promo shot, right? So maybe he and Obsidian are doing better things on other panels.

Even though, at least, Obsidian probably isn't.

All I have to say is this may be better than the group shot of Clarks subs in the Wedding album. I'm an artist and above all to me this is just beautiful work.

There is actually another layer of diversity here. Disability, there are at least three here Sandman=social/PTS (Johny Sorrow/the whole Sandmonster thing:))
Jay+dealing w/ hypermetabolism (don''t believe me see Justice League pilot on youtube)
Alan=Loss of depth-perception and partal blindness

DC can actually write heroes who happen to be disabled well and realisticly unlike how Matt Murdock is too often(and Stark and a certain Professor nearly always) portrayed.
