On A Steel Rod.

Okay, so rather like the JLA Power Girl cover, it looks like the Powers that Be chose to tone down the JSA Citizen Steel crotch-cover. (Devon's got a comparison.)

Seeing the new cover myself, I personally think it was a bad idea to tone down the crotch though. Not because of any feminist reason really, though as a woman I was laughing my ass off during the entirety of crotchgate just so you know. Just because of something Mallet pointed out in a chat.

Basically, that without the package to draw the eye, Citizen Steel's costume is really freaking stupid looking. I'll tell you one thing, I'd rather be looking at his sensible blue-clad crotch than the rest of his stupid-ass costume. And I'm a girl who digs me some stupid costumes.

Seriously. What's with the fin?!

I also resent that it looks less shiny. Why do you hate the shininess, DC?!?!

I think the idea was to reference the golden age Starman a bit with the costume. Only thing I can figure out with that fin and the look.

Oh but Crotchgate was so much fun! I'm still a little bewildered over all the fuss, because as far as I could see, there wasn't a whole lot THERE! Maybe I'm spoiled. The entire universe can't be completely manned by Ken dolls can it

    And yes, shiny is good.

There should be a question mark after my last query. I shouldn't snicker when I'm typing.

Yeah, I didn't get it either. Citizen Steel seemed very, I guess, average. And, well, not the least bit erect. I guess the world of fanboys isn't ready to ancounter anatomy as it is in the wild (i.e., real life).

But really, do you think his costume, fin included, is any lamer than most anything else out there? Have you seen that mask thing Kyle wore?

I don't give a damn one way or the other about the costume. I just wish they could've bothered to give the poor guy a better origin. Can you imagine?

    *Future Super-Heroes Convention*

Spider-Man: Hi, I was bitten by a radioactive spider.
Superman: I came from another planet.
Citizen Steel: I was puked on by a silver man.

    Yeah...

So DC only responds to males being pissed off?

Speaking as a het male I have to say I thought the original was better. My sister saw the new cover art and like "I guess they turned on the air conditioners (shrunken package + loss of sweaty shiny-nessness).

Um, Centurion, the Steel costume has been around since the 70s.

And I've always loved that costume. It's got a very cool, classic Golden Age vibe.

sleestak...well to be fair they also marginally reduced the boob size on PG for that JLA cover. It wasn't a huge difference...but it means they did change two covers -- one anti-female and one anti-male I guess? I personally never really saw the reasons behind the "controversy" so whatever.

Rob - was talking in reference to the fin itself, but upon looking up the actual steel outfit my point still loses its sharpness. Touche`

Also, I wish they would have kept the original art untouched. Are there that many insecure males lacking reflection reading comics?

There was no editing done there, Power Girl was just mad she didn't get the cover and "informed" steel.

Steel clearly wanted to look just like Spiderman, who in his latest bondage cover, legs splayed and crotch prominent, was described in a blog entry somewhere as "smooth as a rub-a-dub dolly".

I couldn't get over all the fanboys who were convinced that Steel was sporting a boner (a steeler? or is that too much of a homoerotic football reference?) Clear that they never looked at another man's hardon in clothes. Too afraid of Teh Gay!

Citizen Steel: I was puked on by a silver man.

No, no, puked on by a silver Nazi.

    Best origin ever!

"Citizen Steel: I was puked on by a silver man."

"And no, it wasn't the Surfer. Or even ROM."

So, I'm the only one perturbed that his blue tones went from cyan to indigo, with no explanation of why?

    All right, then.
