Random Thought About Outsiders:

So on a whim, I picked up Outsiders this month. I haven't been terribly happy with it OYL, so it's been a while. It was actually a decent issue though. Nice surprise or two, but...

Is it wrong that my first thought while closing the book is that either Anissa or Grace is going to end up dead?

Maybe I've gotten a little cynical in my old age...

When it comes to the Judd Winick of the past few years, one can't be cynical ENOUGH.

I wish I knew what happened to the talented dude who wrote Pedro And Me, Frumpy the Clown, and the first few years of The Exiles. Even his non-company owned stuff like The Life and Times of Juniper Lee is pretty awful.

I took a peek at Winick's Shazam thing and it was pretty awful stuff. He's stretched the mythos to the point of breaking and bringing the characters to places they were never intended to go. Seeing Cap suddenly looking like Elric is just too much. Here's hoping that series dies a quick and merciful death and gets swept under the rug with all the other ill-conceived krep.

I was passingly interested in The Outsiders thinking it was Brainwave on the cover. Turned out to be Dr. Sivana, and I want no part of Winick's take on Sivana that he's yet another in DC's burgeoning ranks of evil CEO's.

Please...keep Winick the hell away from the Shazam toys.

When I corresponded briefly with Winick, his big defence against any claim of misogeny was the strong female characters he wrote in Outsiders.

Judd Winick makes me sad. Like Dan said, his first few years of Exiles was so promising, and I enjoyed the first season of Juniper Lee. But everything else he's done since has just been bad. It's like someone flipped a 'good writing' switch off in his head.

He has absolutely no idea where he's going or what he's doing with Outsiders other than arranging set-ups for 'extreme' fight scenes. That much is abundantly clear. I'd love for someone else to take a promising character like Grace and actually make her likable enough for others to see what made me like her. But odds her, since she's his pet character, he'll sooner kill her off than let someone on the ball touch her.

And I don't see Anissa as strong at all. She just feels like a cipher.

The Ultimate Irony is that Winick writes a wonderful Siviana. He's a superbly evil mad scientist mastermind, but he only appears in Outsiders.

The man who has control of Shazam and writes the best Sivana in a long time has decided the two shouldn't mix

    Because he's a stupid face.

I just can't describe it any other way then that.

Judd Winick is a stupid face

For me, Winick is to DC as Millar is to Marvel. He tends to use characters that I like in ways that I hate, from Rayner on down to Captain Marvel.

dan: Sometimes I do still like him. A lot of times though he seems like he tries too hard to make waves or something.

mark: I haven't read yet. I like Freddy though so I may risk it.

    Mary's coma urks me.

marionette: Hmm, that's either a relief or a bad sign.

mela: I liked parts of Outsiders too. Anything with Shift especially. But...sometimes...

mallet: :-) Sivana not in Shazam really doesn't make sense.

So I'm beginning to buy into your theory...

david: :-) I can appreciate that.

Judd is a hypocrite. Do a search on Black Lightning and Tony Isabella.

Judd Winick is a hypocrite, not just a mysogynist. Do a search on Black Lightning and Tony Isabella.
